Exegol- Tuesday evening after that
Rey shouldn't have woken up.
When consciousness returned, she found her hand grasping one that was laying on her abdomen. She was on the ground, being held, and there was no sign of that existential exhaustion that had overtaken her. It was just her and Ben.
Rey shifted to sit up, and found herself staring into the face of a person she knew as well as she knew herself, but she'd never seen him look unsure before.
"Ben?" she said, reaching to touch his face.
He smiled, halfway to a laugh. She'd never seen him do that. She'd seen a smirk once, something that had gotten through his usual mask, when she'd challenged him on the Supremacy, not long before he broke her heart.
Not even thinking, she pulled him into a hug, holding him tightly like she was clinging for dear life. He'd done it. He'd come back, just like she'd known he could. She'd wanted this so badly, for herself, yes, but for Leia, to make sure that Han's death had meant something. Leia wasn't here to see this, but Rey was confident she knew.
And then she realized that Ben was growing cold.
Rey pulled away, looking at him with concern, and the smile was still on his face. Then he dropped back, and she tried to stop him, or at least cushion his fall with her arms, but once he'd hit the ground his body vanished, and he was gone.
He'd sacrificed everything to bring her back, and just like that he was gone, leaving part of her feeling hollow.
She wouldn't mourn Kylo Ren. She would never mourn Kylo Ren. But she dearly would have liked to get to know Ben Solo.
