MCA #1- Saturday afternoon

Rey had been talked into finally buying a bed. Which was how she kept phrasing it in her head, but in actuality she'd just heard the right thing to decide that since it did look like she would be here a while, she should at least have something here that was really her own space. And maybe she'd missed having her own space, considering she'd left something very permanent and immediately jumped into a situation where nothing felt permanent ever.

So there'd been shopping. She'd avoided IKEA and managed to find something she liked without it hurting her (too much) to drop money on it. Now all she had to do was put it together, so she let Duke know where she was and waited, shoving the boxes into one of the bedrooms in the meantime.

And here was Duke, looking curiously around the building as he knocked on her door, a rather battered old tool box in hand.

Other first: Rey had never actually had someone over before.

She opened the door wide enough to let him in, and said, "Hi. Thanks for helping."

And part of why no one had been over was because there really wasn't anything there. There was a lot of space, and while she had the odds and ends of things she needed every day, she hadn't bothered with things she hadn't specifically needed yet.

It looked like she'd barely gotten started moving in. Like she'd signed the lease and hour ago and took a break before the stuff all arrived.

"No problem." He patted his tool box. "I'm a handy guy. Put most of my own place together myself."

Quite literally. Old fishing trawlers did not general look like the Cape Rouge did on the inside.

"How long did it take you to do that?" she wondered, since she had seen what it was like, and as a handy person herself who hasn't had the means to do anything like that... yeah, she was kind of curious.

"Years," Duke said. "It's still a work in progress." Mostly the decorating. He tended to pick up something new everywhere he went, after all. "So let's see this bed! I'm guessing it's kind of . . . minimalist?"

"I promise it's not the most basic thing available, but... pretty much," she said, leading the way to the other room, where she'd already opened the boxes and laid the pieces out.

And yeah, by the picture on the box, it was pretty basic, though there actually was a headboard involved. Girl was expanding her horizons.

"Streamlined, sturdy," Duke said. "I like it. It suits you." He looked around the room. "You know where you're going to want it? It'll be easiest to just build it more or less in position."

"Against the wall here," Rey said, pointing next to one of the boxes. "Not that it's going to get in the way of anything else."

"True." He glanced around again as he started opening the box up. "Where do you keep your clothes?"

"Closet. The room I picked was where my clothes already were," she admitted. "Or am I supposed to get a dresser next?"

"Not if the closet works for you," Duke said. "Might want to get a nightstand, though. Even if all you do in bed is sleep, it's nice to have somewhere to put your phone and, like, a glass of water in easy reach."

"You really want me to have tables," she teased, kneeling on the floor in order to start dealing with pieces.

[betterthanaplan]

"What? Tables are useful," Duke shot back. "And pretty easy to make yourself. Hell, half of mine are just repurposed crates."

Above-decks, anyway.

[thatwaslucky]

"Yeah, I know. And I probably will," Rey conceded. "Making them myself gives me more to keep me occupied, anyway."

"Sounds like fun," Duke said. "Plus, you can make sure it's exactly what you need."

"Exactly," she said, and reached over to grab her own toolkit from where she'd set it, unrolling it to reveal a pretty large set of mostly slightly alien-looking tools and then going to grab the bag of assorted connectors. "There's less worry about what to do when you're done with it, too, if you just made it from parts."

"Sell it," Duke said, leaning over to peer at her tool kit. Huh. He'd've thought tools would be a little more universal than that. "Or stick it on the curb and hope someone decides they want it."

"Or just rescrap it for someone else to use," Rey said. "Have you never seen these before?"

She didn't know how universal tools were, she just knew she liked these.

“Not quite like those,” Duke said. He opened his toolbox so she could get a look at his. “It’s interesting. They’re not quite the same.”

"Different equipment and materials require different tools," Rey said, looking them over. "Nothing here needs a hydrospanner probably outside of Fandom."

“I’m guessing not. Since I have no idea what that is.”

[thatwaslucky]

"It's usually for use on starships," Rey explained, pointing at it. "This one gets used a lot."

Duke took a closer look. "What does it actually do? Because the name just makes it sound like some kind of . . . water wrench."

Rey launched into a while explanation of what exactly it could be used for since canon actually never said, finishing with, "And often, it's very good for beating a part with when you get frustrated and hate it."

"That part is like a standard wrench," Duke said. "And . . . most other tools, when it comes down to it."
