Tah'Nuhna to start- Saturday

It was going to be a fairly quick trip. Since Rey was refusing to let anyone but herself and Chewie behind the controls of the Falon she got the call earlier in the week to come back for a mission, and since it involved some things that were not strictly legal, she'd asked Duke to come along. It should be in and out, no big deal, back after the weekend.

They'd portaled to the temporary base on the ice planet of Tah'Nuhna and had just enough time to make some introductions before they had to get going. It was a little strange to say hello and goodbye to people in the span of a few minutes, but that seemed to be how life was going out here. And maybe there'd be a little more time later before they had to get back to Fandom. After all, this should be easy enough.

Chewie led the way onto the ship, immediately heading to the cockpit to start getting it ready to fly. Rey wasn't far behind, hitting the controls to pull up the landing ramp and telling Duke, "Welcome to the Falcon. We might have more porgs than you."

The mission was actually simple: they'd gotten a lead on some weapons that they had to pick up, then they'd drop off a portion with some rebels at another temporary base before returning to Tah'Nuhna with the rest. Chewie knew what he was doing but there was a language barrier and Rey had absolutely no idea what she was doing with this part, so they let Duke do most of the talking, with Rey piping in to translate for Chewie when needed. That all went well, and they got the shipment on board and settled into the smuggling compartments below the deck, and then they were off to their next destination.

As they lifted off and started through the atmosphere, Rey said, "Okay, that wasn't too bad. I think I could do that."

Which might have been her speaking a little to herself from several months prior when she'd tried telling herself it was fine that she turned down Han's job offer since she probably wasn't suited for it anyway.

No world-ending.

Duke trailed behind, getting a last, faintly awed look at the architecture of this foreign planet, holy crap before turning to look at the inside of the ship itself.

"So they just have a thing for ships, huh?"

"You could. And if all else fails, I'm sure Chewie won't mind if you offer to let him tear their arms off." He was maybe misreading the big fuzzy guy, but Duke had a feeling he enjoyed some good, violent humor.

"Maybe in your case," Rey said with a little smile, leading the way towards the cockpit. "A few invaded while we were on Ahch-To and now I think no one knows how to get them to leave without destroying the ecosystem of planets we're begging to be nice to us."

And there were absolutely nests around, in corners and tangled into wiring, if he was looking closely enough.

Chewie, for his part, considered that, and shrugged with growls that translated to the equivalent of "It's been a while."

He seemed pretty cool with it, though.

Don't think he wasn't noticing; the Rouge had her share of those, too.

He let out a wry chuckle. "Yeah, you're going to have to give me tips on that one. I've had to try to keep them from invading Haven twice now."

Leading to what had surely to be on the top 100 list of worst ways to break up with someone, ever. Not that he and Nathan had technically been together again just yet. . . .

"I think we mainly keep the door closed. Or let Chewie herd them around," Rey said, and added, "Don't tell him I told you that."

Duke clicked his tongue and pointed at him. "See? There you go." He grinned up at him. "I like this guy."

He was riding a bit of a high from the negotiation, to be honest. He hadn't worked a good deal in ages, it seemed, and it was nice to get back to something he knew he was good at.

Plus, you know, it distracted him from the whole "we're about to go back into space again" part of things.

"Has to maintain his tough-guy image, huh?" Duke had been slightly taken aback on meeting the giant, fanged apparent captain of the Falcon, but had done his best not to show it. Fandom had prepared him well for that, at least. "Your secret is safe with me."

Rey chuckled and went quiet again as they broke atmosphere and found themselves in the black of space again...

...right in the path of a Star Destroyer and several smaller First Order ships.

"Uh oh."

". . . Wow." Duke stared out at the ships. "A police blockade really looks exactly the same no matter where you go."

If he got shot down on a space mission, Octavia was going to be so pissed.

"So, uh. This is where we go for evasive maneuvers, right? Retreat pattern delta or whatever?"

Chewie was a big teddy bear anyway. A teddy bear that Rey never wanted to yell at her again because it was scary.

"I appreciate it," she said, and once they got to the cockpit she gestured for him to take one of the seats behind her or Chewie, then slid easily into the pilots's seat. "Ready for this?"

"More or less," she said, as Chewie growled the same. "Are they here for us or someone else?"

They'd have to get out either way.

Duke took a deep breath and took his seat.

"Not even a little." He flashed her a grin. "But let's do it anyway."

If he somehow got sucked into the vacuum of space, he was going to haunt Rey so hard.

"Does it actually matter?" Duke asked. "In my experience, the law will happily take you down whether they were looking for you or not."

"It'll be fine," she assured him, flipping switches to turn on the repulsors to lift them into the air. "This ship has done this a million times."

"They're actually worse than the law. But if they're not here for us we might not have to fight," Rey said, as the console started beeping the hail.

"Mmhm!" Duke nodded. "And you're a great mechanic, so I'm sure it definitely won't spring a leak and put us all through explosive decompression."

Yes, he knew that was ridiculous. His hands were still going to stay locked down on his chair until they hit -- cruising speed, or whatever.

"Oh hey. Well, uh. Fingers crossed, then."

Duke really didn't want to be in a space-fight. He was barely getting used to the idea of being in space.

"It definitely will not," she said, not sure this would be reassuring but trying anyway. They'd at least be in space in a minute anyway. "You can close your eyes if you want."

"Not sure that's true," Duke said. "But -- thanks anyway."

They made through the atmosphere and the sky opened up in front of them. Duke caught himself holding his breath and let it out slowly.

". . . Okay, that's pretty impressive, yeah."

Chewie barked an order to not answer the hail, and Rey said, "You're probably right, they'd know the ship."

She looked back at Duke. "I don't suppose you know how to shoot."

"I like it," Rey said with a little smile. "Want to hang out for a minute or do you want to get out immediately?"
