Outside MHA and around town- Saturday morning

Rey was by nature a problem-solver. She got into a situation, she figured a way to fix it, a lot of the time on the fly as the problem popped up.

The fact that she still had no idea how to find Silver was kind of killing her, and it wasn't exactly something she could relax about for a minute. She needed to be trying something, so she was fully planning on spending her day patrolling town and seeing if she stumbled upon something. She fired off a quick text to Annie since having people go missing meant having backup would be smart, and made sure to be walking by her building when she thought the text might be received.

[For Annie and all the SP!]

Annie shot back a quick confirmation when she got the text, hardly hesitating to think about it at all. She darted out a moment later, dressed in workout gear since she'd been getting ready to go to the gym.

This was, of course, much more important than training today.

"You haven't heard or found anything yet?" she asked, clearly worried as she approached. (Like, obviously not, but she had to ask.)

"It's always worth trying," Annie agreed with a little nod, trying to stamp down on her worry a bit. It wasn't useful right now. "It's been multiple days since you saw John last?"
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - you can tell me the truth)

"We're going to find him," Annie said almost automatically, because she had to believe that, and reached out to reassuringly touch Rey on the arm. "The island's just doing something weird. None of his stuff's missing, right?"

Not that she thought he would have taken off without telling Rey, but she was just kind of working through possibilities.

"Right," Annie agreed, not voicing the thought that he could have gone, like, anywhere with a portal, time-displaced or not. They sure would feel silly if it turned out Silver was off having a fun, carefree weekend in Vegas or had taken himself to the National Zoo to see the pandas or something, right?

Though, again, she really doubted he would have gone anywhere voluntarily without at least telling Rey, but that was -- grim.

"Okay, I'm assuming you've looked everywhere obvious," she said, thinking through it. "Have you tried down by the water?" Because pirate? Maybe?
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - thinking)

"So we think they're...moving holes?" Annie said, feeling stupid even as she said it. "I mean, I know, that doesn't make sense. But they must close back up or something or we would have noticed."

Right? She kind of stuck to her own circuits in town for the most part, but Rey had been canvassing, and people generally were pretty observant around here.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - real talk)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2021-07-03 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"I can send a blast down, if we find one. Just to check it out," Annie agreed with a firm nod, since it would probably be the safest thing to do until they had more information on what the hell was going on here. (As though she wouldn't just have to stand there and watch Rey jump in as soon as they found a hole.) "I hope they're not...like, sentient holes."

That was a new sentence.

"I mean," Annie mused, "sinkholes are totally a thing on this planet, where, like, the ground just sort of...opens up unexpectedly?" She did not know a ton about this phenomenon. "But if that was the case, there'd be a big hole where the fire station was or whatever, you know? The naturally-occurring ones don't close back up."
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - looking off)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2021-07-03 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"I just don't want to be caught unawares," Annie admitted. Like Silver had been, apparently. "But I also feel like we're missing obvious pieces, and it's Fandom so it's not like logic applies. Like I think we should try to draw a hole out? But I don't know how to...bait one?"

Again, not a thing she had said before.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - uhhhhhhh)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2021-07-03 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, yeah, and if we figure out what does it, we can avoid it," Annie agreed. "Can you like --" She gestured vaguely, as she often did when referring to all things Force, "sense anything about this?"
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - don't be part of the problem)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2021-07-03 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"You can tell individual people from each other? That's useful." That was actually fascinating, and Annie would have asked more questions if she hadn't Annie felt a bolt of brand-new worry. Because yeah, that either meant that he was gone from the island, or something was blocking Rey from feeling him.

Neither was a great option.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - sensitive)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2021-07-03 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Is it the kind of thing where you'll know right away if John...comes back online?" Annie asked, hoping that that terminology was close enough.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - your story made me sad)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2021-07-03 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Are you...." Annie started, but no, she already knew the answer. There was no way Rey was okay. "I can't imagine what this is like for you."

Annie would like to think that she'd be able to keep a cool head if Diego disappeared like this, but she knew she'd at least internally be absolutely losing her shit.

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2021-07-03 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"You are doing something," Annie assured her. "This is something."

But there really wasn't enough to go on, beyond 'moving holes, I guess?'

Annie almost suggested they order donuts from that new place while they looked around, just as a cheerful little distraction, but thought better of it. Not the time. "I almost wish there were monsters or something for us to fight. This is -- harder."

"We have a guest room," Annie offered gently, just putting it out there. "But fixing it is better. Maybe it's a weekend thing?"

They usually started on Friday or Saturday, sure, but -- maybe?

(Though maybe the fire station been missing longer than that?)
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - giving this some thought)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2021-07-04 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Has anything like this happened before?" Annie had to wonder. "It might be that volcano thing I kept hearing about when I first got here."

And that had at least ended up with everyone seemingly safe but with a great story to tell?
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - neutral)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2021-07-04 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"If there was precedent, he'd know," Annie agreed, frowning. There was a movement out of the corner of her eye, and she had a hand up and illuminated before she'd really registered what it was.

It was a squirrel, which scurried off in the other direction.

Annie was maybe a little jumpy about the idea of there being monsters (which she maintained would be easier to deal with) and these migrating holes.
defenderofdesmoines: (annie - smartass face)

[personal profile] defenderofdesmoines 2021-07-04 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
"Could've been a hole." Like that would have helped? "Or a monster."

At this rate, if there weren't monsters, Annie was going to be kind of disappointed.
