It was a little embarrassing how long it had taken Rey to realize that two of the most important people in her life didn't really know each other. Once she did, she'd taken to fixing that right away- after pollen, and kids, and the trip to Massachusetts, and trying to resolve scheduling conflicts, and…

So Rey brought Adrian and Boston over for dinner, where they came inside and said their hellos and did the introductions and got the initial niceties out of the way. She didn't think it'd be weird at all, but very early on she asked, "Is any help needed with dinner?"

Again: not worried or anything. But it was a good conversation starter! Or a reason to get her out of the room to talk! Or whatever. As long as they got along not that she was worried.

Adrian had, of course, brought a bottle of wine and some flowers. Boston had brought himself and seemed to think that was plenty (in fairness, a) it was, and b) he was also in a little bowtie, so...)

"I'm happy to lend a hand as well," Adrian said, while Boston headed over to Rey to show off his bowtie allow himself to be petted.

Anakin smiled at them both. "I'm touched that you think I make anything complicated. My wife eats bagged salad straight from the bag. I will take assistance in opening the wine, though."

"Happy to provide," Adrian said. "I admit, I'm not much of a wine guy, but fortunately my neighbors are, so I was given excellent advice." He offered Anakin a small smile. "Unless it's terrible, in which case I was led horribly astray."

Anakin laughed. "I like wine that's wet and free," he admitted. "I can't really tell the vintages apart."

"Oh good, that's exactly my level of expertise," Adrian laughed. "I can promise that it's wet, it's free, and anything more than that would be wasted on my palate anyway. And that saves me from apologizing if the wine doesn't go with the food." He laughed again. "Apparently, that is a very big deal in some circles."

"My wife's grandparents care," Anakin admitted. "I think that's part of why I can't bring myself to care."

"Where are they from, western Connecticut?" Adrian asked with a disbelieving laugh.

Look, he was from Massachusetts. Some jokes were required.

"Actually, yes," Anakin said with a very unbecoming snort.

[witchoftheflesh]

"Oh!" Adrian grimaced slightly. "That's unfortunate."

His unintentional gaffe, or the fact they were from western Connecticut? He wasn't specifying.

"I tend to think so," Anakin agreed with a smile. "No one should have to go to dinners in Stamford."

[witchoftheflesh]

That drew another smile. "Did you meet your wife here on the island?" Adrian asked.

It seemed the most likely way that someone from space would end up meeting someone from Stamford, Connecticut.

"You are a guest," Rey pointed out, while knowing that he was also Adrian.

Meanwhile she definitely took a seat so that she could pet Boston properly. "You look so dapper."

Which also kept her sitting. Ha! Another win for Boston the Great Tactician. "Thank you," he said, with immense dignity as befitting a great tactician. "First impressions are important."

"Does being a guest ever stop you from volunteering to help?" Adrian teased, leaning over to give Rey a kiss.

"This isn't about me," she said with a smile.

"That's a no," Adrian said in a loud stage whisper to Boston.

[thatwaslucky]

"I don't know what to tell you," Rey teased. "Jedi help. Part of the job and all."

"I could say the same for witches," Adrian said. "I'm pretty sure I did, back when we were having this conversation the other way 'round at my mother's back at the beginning of the month."

"Yeah, I realized as she was saying it," she admitted. "Also we were there a while."

[witchoftheflesh]

"Oh, so your guest status had worn off by then?" he teased, his smile growing soft and fond as he remembered Rey's laughter mingling with his mother's in the kitchen of his boyhood home.

"Sort of?" She'd at least gotten comfortable. "The longer you're around the harder it is to not help."

[witchoftheflesh]

"Just remember you said that when I volunteer to do the dishes," Adrian told her.

[thatwaslucky]

"Or," Rey said, "I can do them and you and Anakin can get to know each other which is the whole point of tonight."

Go ahead. Argue against that.

[witchoftheflesh]

"I..." Yeah, he had nothing for that.

"Outflanked and the evening's barely begun," Boston noted. "Bodes well."

[thatwaslucky]

"He'll," she said with a nod towards Anakin, "probably be on his good behavior today so I have to make up for it."

"Does that mean he's not going to use dinner to rope me into Shenanigans?" Look, a man needed hope.

[thatwaslucky]

She paused, just a touch too long.

"Maybe!"

That was hope, right?

[witchoftheflesh]

"I'm filled with confidence," he assured her dryly. "Truly."

[thatwaslucky]

"I could maybe put a good worn in for you," she said.

Which could also backfire, who knows!

[witchoftheflesh]

"Quickly--is it more likely to happen if he doesn't like me, or if he does?" he asked, like a) he wouldn't be a good sport about it either way, or b) he would ever intentionally do something to make Rey's grandfather dislike him.

"Or can be hard to tell with him," she considered. "But he's generally in a good mood at those so it'd probably mean he likes you."

Rey, why did you like to hurt him like this?

"Okay, Boston. What's your tactical suggestion on how to get out of this both liked and also un-Shenaniganed?"

Boston didn't even bother to raise his head. "Be a cat."

Not a useful answer, no, but certainly an accurate one!

Because there was no winning! But it was worse if he didn't like you. Just ask Jaina.

"It'll be okay," Rey smiled, taking his hand. "And honestly, even if he does rope you in, some are really fun."

And sometimes you had to squish jello between your toes. Or figure out how to wash mud out of clothes. Or...

"If he calls for me, I'm bringing you along with me," Adrian decided. You know, as if Rey wasn't stuck doing these on the regular. "Couples' Shenanigans or something."
