Jakku- Thursday evening

Rey's days mostly followed the same pattern. Wake up, scavenge through the wreckage of war remnants, clean what she could find, sell what she could clean, eat if she could sell enough, start again tomorrow. Today had been a good haul that still didn't pay enough, but at least she got something resembling dinner.

And then she'd heard the electronic squeal.

She had been eating outside, and she jumped to her feet and stood very still, listening. When she heard another squeal, she immediately grabbed her staff and took off on the sand in the direction from which the sound had come. There she saw a Teedo, yelling at a little orange and white BB unit, struggling to keep him in a net. She didn't know why she intervened- it wasn't as if the job here wasn't to scavenge things like that very droid- except that said droid seemed afraid. So she yelled back in Teedo, and argued, and finally just walked over and cut the droid from the net until the Teedo cursed her out and left on his luggabeast.

The droid beeped something rude at the retreating Teedo, and Rey shushed him until they were alone. "That's just Teedo. Wants you for parts. He has no respect for anyone," she explained, and took a good look at him to see whether he was okay. "Your antenna's broken." She knelt in the sand next to him and removed the antenna to straighten it. "Where do you come from?"

They didn't exactly get a lot of droids like this around here. Those they did get were likely sacrificed for parts. He was new, and she hadn't seen anyone fly in to Niima lately.

He beeped a response, and Rey smiled, just a little. "Classified," she repeated. "Me, too. Big secret." She snapped the antenna back on and stood, pointing towards town. "Niima Outpost is that way. Keep away from the sinking fields in the north, you'll drown in the sand."

She took a few steps towards home and heard him beep another query as he started trailing her. "Don't follow me. Town's that way," she said. She'd help him out, but she didn't want company, and she didn't even know what to do with a droid.

She started off again, and this time his beep was sad. He was alone, and scared, and didn't have anyone else, and he'd already had enough trouble for one night. If anyone else got to him, she he really would get scrapped. And Rey, despite everything she actually wanted from this moment, rolled her eyes, turned back to him, and saw him rocking back and forth in the sand like a little kid who really wanted a yes.

Finally, she nodded in the direction of the fallen AT-AT.

BB-8 quickly caught up to her, like he was worried she'd change her mind.

"In the morning, you go," she warned.

He let out another beep, and Rey replied, "You're welcome."
