D'qar- Sunday
There wasn't a lot of time to hang around the base. They had the map, there wasn't any reason to put off going to find Luke when time was this important and they were racing the First Order there. And Leia thought Rey should be the one to do it. Rey hadn't really argued, but she was going to just be some unimportant stranger to him. He didn't have to listen to her.
But Leia wanted her to go, and if there was one thing Rey was quickly learning, it was that if she trusted you with something, she meant it. Actually, Rey wanted to go. These things she was feeling weren't going away, and while Leia was Force sensitive she wasn't the person to give Rey the help she needed... but there was Luke. Just like Maz had said.
Chewie had volunteered the Falcon, though he'd insisted on doing the pre-flight checks himself, and he was the one who got Luke's old astromech aboard. Since it wasn't like she had a lot to pack, Rey used the time to stop in the medical center to see Finn. He hadn't woken up yet, and she could only hope he'd do so by the time she got back. She couldn't imagine that a lightsaber to the back wasn't a big deal, and the thought of losing him made her stomach twist in knots. Even if he didn't know she was there, she sat with him until it was time to go.
"We'll see each other again," she said quietly. "I believe that." And then she kissed his forehead, and left him there.
On the tarmac, she said her goodbyes to Leia, who made sure Rey had everything she needed, and gave her a beacon so that she'd be able to find the fleet when they moved. This was absolutely a mom thing, and Rey recognized it, even if not from experience. Honestly, she liked it, and it maybe Leia needed to do it.
Rey had started to walk towards the Falcon when she heard Leia call, "Rey."
She turned.
"May the Force be with you."
She'd heard that before. It felt different knowing that it was. Because it was. Even if she didn't know what it all meant.
Rey smiled, and nodded, and continued on toward the ship.
Chewie was still prepping things in the cockpit when she got onboard... from the copilot's seat. She'd assumed he would take over captaining with Han gone, and the deferment was a surprise. She didn't argue it, though. If he wanted to play second, that was up to him.
She did smile a little, though, as she slid into the pilot's seat and watched him start the takeoff procedures. Something felt right about this. Hopeful. Like maybe for the first time ever, she was exactly where she was supposed to be.
She could get used to it.
[Sixth verse or whatever same as the first. I think a tiny bit of stuff is from the Force Awakens novelization by James Luceno? I think? Look I started this over a year ago.]
