MCA #1- Friday night, and probably later

This was really Annie and Summer's party, that just so happened to take place in Rey's stupidly giant apartment. Still, even while she'd been told a lot of people might be coming, Rey was a little concerned no one actually would, and then she'd have to figure out what to do with just... a ridiculous amount of alcohol and so many inflatable reindeer. And packages for this thing had been showing up daily for a week, including as late as this afternoon, and after all of this, people had better show up.

There were so many Christmas lights around the place that the apartment lights weren't even on, Summer's Jello shots were very much on display, and while there was mistletoe hanging from the ceiling, it wouldn't force you to kiss anyone. (No, no, that's the alcohol's job.) It was jolly as hell up in here, and honestly loud enough that even if you decided to skip the party you'd probably have some idea of how it went.

Also Tino showed up like ten minutes early and was just kind of hanging around.

"I'm in nine, neighbor," Annie said with a smile. "And welcome back. I only got here two months ago."

"Really? What brought you to the island?" she asked. "The first time I came here, I just crossed the causeway then got stuck here for few years."

"Work," Annie answered easily. "I was supposed to be your resident superhero, but. You know."

If Allie had been here before, then she probably already knew how there was absolutely no shortage of those types around.

"But I like it here, so I stuck around."

"So you're one of those." Allie couldn't help but smile. "There's always been a bunch of them on the island. Technically I'm not a superhero, but vampire speed and strength are useful to have in a fight."

"Vampire?" And now Annie was, sorry, peering a little closer at Allie. "Congratulations, I think you're the first one I've met."

No, she actually worked for one and had no idea.

"I think Eric and I are the only ones on the island right now," she said. "A few years ago there was this weird one who worked at the clinic, but I think she's gone."

"Eric like Eric who owns the Devil's Nest?" Annie checked, a little alarmed. "Wait, he's a vampire?"

Annie was really dense, honestly. The place was stocked with TruBlood and she knew he was a thousand years old. Should have connected those dots to his lack of tan, girl.

"Yup. Eric, my boss." Allie shrugged a shoulder and pushed her hair back. "He's a thousand-year-old Viking and incredibly powerful. He was nice enough to give me a job when I first came to the island. His theory was that he didn't want a baby vamp eating the people on the island and drawing attention. When I came back last month he let me pick up a shift."

He also helped her fence a small fortune in gemstones, but that wasn't that important.

"We're coworkers," Annie observed, reeling a little from the new information, still. "I knew the Viking part, but - huh."

She tilted her head at Allie with a very slight smile. "I take it you don't eat people?" She seemed way too nice.

"Strictly True Blood on the island," she promised. "I'm firmly on Team White Hat. Back home? It's not the nicest place. I stick to the bad guys."

"You seem pretty White Hat," Annie said, her smile widening. "Pro tip, then - if we're ever fighting anything here, which seems increasingly likely, you're gonna want to stay far away from me. Um, assuming you follow normal vampire rules about sunlight, I mean - that's kinda my thing."

And normally there would be a demonstration right about here, but Annie had drunk enough that she didn't trust herself not to fry her phone. (If only that thoughtfulness had remained in place all night!)

"Oh thanks for the warning, because yes, I do follow the normal vampire rules, none of that sparkle in the sunshine bullshit." Years later and Allie was still annoyed.

"My hands light up," Annie shared. "I'll aim away from you if I see you, but like, heads up."

A pause as she considered it, and added, "There's sparkly vampires?"

The whole superhero thing created a bit of a pop culture black hole, where Annie was from. Not a lot of call for sexy teen vampires when sexy teen superheroes were literally in every city.

"It was a book series I read when I first got here," she explained. "It was pretty ridiculous. I think the books are still in my apartment if you ever feel like reading and laughing."

"I'm a super slow reader, but I'd love that," Annie told her sincerely. "That sounds pretty dumb, but like, in an entertaining way."

"Stop by any time. Well, anytime after the sun sets," Allie corrected herself. "Vampire rules means I have to sleep once the sun rises. I can push it for an hour or two if I have to, but it's hard."

"I have so many nosy vampire questions for you," Annie admitted. "We have people with powers where I'm from, but not vampires at all."

But as with all things since she'd moved to Fandom, Annie didn't want to just rudely ask how Allie felt about garlic or something, in case that was an offensive stereotype or something she didn't know about.

Fortunately, Allie had long ago gotten over any shame about being a vampire. "That's fine. Ask away. But I have to say that where I'm from we've got vampires, and vampire zombies, but no people with powers. So I've got some questions of my own."

"And consider me an open, super-abled book," Annie told her with a broad smile. "Okay, so, like, are you...immortal, or whatever?"

Eric was apparently a thousand, after all.

"Immortal," she replied. "I mean, I can be killed, don't get me wrong. But it takes effort, especially as I get older. Of course, compared to someone like Eric, I'm only a baby. I was seventeen when I was turned and I've been a vampire for close to ten years."

"And you're seventeen forever?" Annie checked, because yeah, if she hadn't been told otherwise fairly quickly, she might've taken her for a student. (Though Annie was also notoriously bad at guessing people's ages, in general.)

A short, vaguely malnourished seventeen at that. "It was be turned, or die. It was an easy choice at that time. I wanted to live no matter what."

"My turn. Did you always know you had powers?"

"Yikes," Annie totally understated, though it was a very genuine reaction all the same. "Um, yeah - I was born super-abled. If you ask my mom, I blinded the doctor when I was born, but she likes to exaggerate, so who knows." She rolled her eyes a little, somewhere between affectionate and exasperated.

"My mom would have said I was just too stubborn to die." Allie's smile was wistful at the thought.

"So I've heard the term mutants before, but super-abled is a new way to describe powers. I guess you're from a different world then?"

"Oh yeah, I don't think anyone here is from the same place as me." Which only bummed her out when she made a Seven reference and no one got it, or when she really wanted to go to Jitter Bean. "I know Kitty's described herself as a mutant, and I think it's a little different but kinda similar - where I'm from, people like me have powers, but we're also usually pretty strong, and really tough. Like, bulletproof, I mean."
