It annoyed Rey that having Strunk and Devi around was paying off so well. She was used to being alone. She lived alone, she worked alone by choice, she could go days at a time without talking to another living being. And Devi talked constantly.
But they were good salvagers. They knew the graveyard as well as Rey did, but like everyone working in the deserts of Jakku, they had discovered their own prime spots, their own special finds that they'd kept hidden from everyone else. Many of the parts the Rey had begun to despair of ever repairing, let alone replacing, Devi and Strunk were able to produce in a matter of days. They were able to pull in parts Rey hadn't had access to, and there were things that technically shouldn't have worked on this particular ship, but Rey was able to fashion them into functioning pieces.
The hours were as long as they had been before, when she'd been alone, but they were getting more done, and it was easier to spare certain pieces for sale to Unkar so that Rey didn't have to go days at a time without eating. She hated that this was working out, but she was feeling more hopeful about this project than she had in a very long time.
She still didn't trust it.
She had been getting there first every day, but she also wanted to be the last to leave, because she feared if she wasn't, she'd lose the ship overnight. Today at least she had the excuse that she needed to rework a problem with the environmentals, which was a one-person job and didn't require any heavy lifting. Rey sent them off fit the night, watched them walk far enough away through the cockpit viewport that she felt comfortable, and only then did she get back to work.
